Séga Music

Séga is one of the major music genres of Mauritius & Réunion (also The Seychelles) usually sung in local Creole language variations. It has origins in the music of African slaves. The music's traditional form was largely improvised and intensely emotional and expressed the tribulations of a subjugated, initially enslaved, people (sung to protest against injustices in localsociety). It is primarily dance music but was also used for dirges and as part of traditional exorcisms. Instruments used include: The Maravanne (rattle), Moutia (Drum), Ravanne (Drum) & Bobre (bow)
